How we bring experts together

ARMY research laboratory

Developing technologies to keep warfighters safe

To expand technologies that save lives on the battlefield, the Army Research Laboratory located its Northeast regional hub at Northeastern’s Kostas Research Institute. Teams based in both Arlington, Virginia, and Burlington, Massachusetts, are focused on cybersecurity and are creating tactical shelters, smart sensors, and nanomaterials with medical, defense, and energy applications.

DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY

A virtual SENTRY to protect public venues

With a $36 million contract from the Department of Homeland Security, Northeastern engineering professor Michael Silevitch is leading 11 academic and industry partners in creating a surveillance system for large public venues, including schools, stadiums, and public transit systems. Their virtual SENTRY uses video feeds, cellphone traffic, drone footage, and social media posts to help officials assess and thwart local attacks.
