PARTNERSHIPS AT WORK
How our collaborations fuel innovation

Partnering with the U.S. Army on technologies to keep warfighters safe
To develop technologies that save lives on the battlefield, the Army Research Laboratory located its Northeast regional hub at Northeastern’s George J. Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security. Teams at campuses in both Arlington, Virginia, and Burlington, Massachusetts, focus on cybersecurity, tactical shelters, smart sensors, and nanomaterials for medical, defense, and energy applications.

Working with the Department of Homeland Security on protective technology for public spaces
With a $36-million contract from the Department of Homeland Security, Northeastern engineering professor Michael Silevitch is leading 11 academic and industry partners in creating a surveillance system for large public venues, such as schools, stadiums, and public transit. Their virtual SENTRY uses video feeds, cell phone traffic, drone footage, and social media posts to help officials assess and thwart local attacks.

Partnering with AeroVironment on drones for security, surveillance, and package delivery
In 2019, Northeastern welcomed AeroVironment, the leading U.S. drone maker, to its Burlington, Massachusetts campus, and built a printing and electronics lab to the company’s specifications. The research partners are pooling expertise in AI and materials to ramp up drone technology and manufacturing for national security, defense, civilian, and commercial purposes.
